Nutritional Supplement Shortage Drives Changes at AON
Description

Residents are being admitted to Long Term Care in a frail state and are more nutritionally depleted than ever. Some residents do not enjoy the taste of commercial supplements, making this challenge more complex. Dietitians and Nutrition Managers have always had to be creative in care planning extras and fortified foods. When supplements were in short supply from distributors, creativity became even more essential. Recovery Drink was formulated to be a 2.0Kcal/mL supplement drink made from natural ingredients that can be easily obtained from our regular suppliers. Milk, skim milk powder, and coconut milk are the main ingredients. This provides extra protein, Kcal and nutrients to help heal wounds, prevent weight loss, recover from surgery, and other health issues when food intake is inadequate.  AON has offered Recovery Drink for the past 18 months and the results have been great. Resident acceptance is high, wounds heal well, and weight seems to be maintained more easily. Nurses confirm that it has a good consistency when thickened, and medications mix into it easily. Residents have tolerated Recovery Drink well without any noted stomach or bowel issues.
